Philosophers who want to expand their curriculum to include non-Western philosophy often worry that they lack expertise to do so well. While that may be true for advanced courses, I think that it is possible for non-specialists to teach introductory- and even intermediate-level philosophy courses in Indian Philosophy given the materials available to us today.

1. Teaching the commentaries on the Bhagavad Gītā (Śaṅkara and Rāmānuja): Handout for instructors | Classroom Activity
Teaching the Gītā in tandem with the Gītā Bhāṣya-s gives students an introduction to the commentarial tradition in Indian thought. It gives them an opportunity to see how later thinkers have tried to resolve tensions within the text. Focusing on 2.12-18, as I have done, allows for an explicit dialectic between Rāmānuja and Śaṅkara (this is one of only two places where Rāmānuja explicitly engages in polemics). It also illustrates the relationship between metaphysics and ethics in Indian philosophy.
